Shopify offers a free trial for building and configuring an online store, but it does not publish one universal duration or promotional price. The current trial length is determined when the account is created and can vary by signup time, account path, and store location. The trial starts at initial signup—not when work on the store begins—and a new store remains private or has an inactive checkout until an eligible paid plan is selected.

After the trial
Starting the trial requires an email address, business questions, store location, and a Shopify account—not a subscription payment method. If no paid plan is selected, the store pauses when the trial ends. If a paid plan is selected during the trial, Shopify begins charging after the trial, potentially at an account-specific promotional rate before standard plan pricing. Installed paid apps can add charges to the first invoice. Confirm the displayed duration, plan, billing cycle, promotion, app charges, tax, and location-specific price before activating checkout.
Eligibility
Create an eligible Shopify account through the current free-trial path and provide the store location. Basic, Grow, and Advanced can be explored during the standard trial; Shopify Plus and stores created through an AI tool or partner can have different paths and durations. To accept customer orders, select a paid plan and configure a payment provider. Choosing a paid plan during the trial creates post-trial billing unless the store is manually paused or deactivated; choosing no paid plan leaves the store paused without an active subscription.
