What it unlocks
No-cost intake, charge filing, notice to the employer, possible mediation, investigation, conciliation or agency enforcement, and a notice of right to sue when applicable; state or local fair-employment rights may be preserved through dual filing.
Who qualifies
Worker or job applicant alleging covered employment discrimination or retaliation; Authorized person or organization filing on behalf of an aggrieved person
Requirements
The allegation must concern an employer, employment agency, union, or labor organization and a basis or activity covered by an EEOC-enforced law, subject to employer-size and other jurisdiction rules. A signed charge usually must be filed within 180 calendar days, extended to 300 days in many jurisdictions; age, Equal Pay Act, federal-employee, and other rules differ.
How to activate
Act promptly: submit an inquiry through the EEOC Public Portal and schedule intake, visit an EEOC office, call for filing guidance, or send a signed letter with the required details. Do not assume an inquiry, appointment request, internal grievance, or other agency complaint has filed the formal charge or stopped the deadline.
Cost basis
No-cost access. The core benefit has no required payment, purchase, deposit, paid membership, or pre-existing paid-product relationship under the captured terms.
Cost and fees
EEOC intake and charge filing are free, but representation, private litigation, records, experts, travel, and court costs can be separate. EEOC must notify the respondent, cannot investigate every allegation to a favorable result, and does not extend filing deadlines merely because a person is seeking advice.
Geography
US, Certain U.S. citizens employed abroad by U.S.-controlled employers, Separate federal-sector process
Personalization
