Requirements
The applicant must own and occupy a home in an eligible rural area, meet the county very-low-income limit, and be unable to obtain affordable credit elsewhere. Grants require age 62 or older and inability to repay a loan.
How to activate
Check address and income eligibility, contact the local Rural Development office, and submit the required home, income, asset, and repair documentation.
Cost basis
Variable by provider or eligibility. The user's out-of-pocket cost cannot be represented by one fixed amount because it depends on provider policy, income, household, geography, selected service, coverage group, subsidy amount, or the underlying program. It may be free, reduced, sliding-scale, or partly paid.
Cost and fees
Grants have no regular repayment but can be recaptured if the home is sold within three years. Loans, title work, packaging, and noncovered repairs can create costs.
