What it unlocks
A credit based on household income, family size, residence, and the cost of the benchmark Marketplace plan. Eligible households may take advance payments to lower monthly premiums or claim the allowed credit on the federal return.
Who qualifies
Tax household enrolled in Marketplace health coverage and eligible for the Premium Tax Credit
Requirements
The tax household must enroll an eligible person in Marketplace coverage for at least one month, meet the applicable household-income and filing rules, lack eligibility for affordable qualifying coverage such as an employer plan or government program, and not be claimed as another taxpayer's dependent. Married taxpayers generally must file jointly unless a statutory exception applies.
How to activate
Apply for Marketplace coverage and estimated advance credit, keep the Marketplace eligibility notices and Form 1095-A, then file a federal return with Form 8962 to compute and reconcile the final credit even if a return otherwise would not be required.
Cost basis
No-cost access. The core benefit has no required payment, purchase, deposit, paid membership, or pre-existing paid-product relationship under the captured terms.
Cost and fees
There is no fee to claim the credit, but the enrollee remains responsible for premiums and cost sharing not covered by the credit. Advance payments can be reduced or repaid when household circumstances differ from the Marketplace estimate, and eligibility rules and income thresholds can change by tax year.
