Entitlement facts

Benefit type
Government benefit. A government-funded or administered benefit, service, coverage program, assistance program, or public access route. Taxonomy definition →
What it unlocks
A rental subsidy plus VA case management and clinical support through a participating public housing agency and VA medical center or designated service provider.
Who qualifies
Eligible veteran experiencing homelessness and covered family
Requirements
The veteran must be referred by a participating VA medical center, clinic, contractor, or designated provider and meet current homelessness, income, citizenship or eligible-immigration, and other HUD-VASH screening rules. Voucher and unit availability vary locally.
How to activate
Contact a VA medical center and ask for HUD-VASH screening, or call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans for connection to the local VA homelessness team.
Cost basis
Variable by provider or eligibility. The user's out-of-pocket cost cannot be represented by one fixed amount because it depends on provider policy, income, household, geography, selected service, coverage group, subsidy amount, or the underlying program. It may be free, reduced, sliding-scale, or partly paid.
Cost and fees
There is no fee for screening or case management. The voucher subsidizes rather than eliminates rent; participant rent, deposits, utilities, and other lease costs can remain.
Geography
US, Participating HUD-VASH public housing agency and VA service areas
Personalization
Published eligibility is not described as individually targeted.
